Barwon HeadsFinally a break in the weather saw anglers jump at the chance to wet a line. Venturing out offshore from Point Lonsdale to Barwon Heads was a popular move amongst anglers with Sundays calm conditions to tempting. Trellys Fishing World Geelong’s Peri Stavropoulos and Kevin Hunter set out Sunday morning anchoring up in 30 meters of water out from Barwon Heads the guys set out baits of fresh Australian Salmon. It was not long before Peri boated the first gummy shark of around 7.5kg. By the end of the morning the pair had caught 3 gummy shark releasing one and two seven gill sharks to 30kg. Of note Peri and Kevin did not put down any burley.
St Leonards Back inside the bay and squid were really on fire. Excellent fishing was had from St Leonards though to Clifton Springs with not only fantastic numbers but some thumping big specimens too. Casting artificial jigs in size 3 was a standout tactic with white colouration like the Shimano 14T. Three to four meters of water was preferable with clean water a must.
Snapper Snapper anglers started to poke their heads out around the Point Richards channel and outer harbour but reports did remain slow. Typically if you come across an early season snapper it will be a well-conditioned fish. Small gummy sharks to 5kg were a by catch for anglers fishing the channel. Just remember to stay clear of big ships and do not anchor in the channel.
Corio Bay Inside Corio Bay anglers casting soft plastics found the salmon a little hit and miss but when a school was located large numbers of fish were easy to boat. Three inch gulp minnows worked a treat.
Lake PurrumbeteHeading west Lake Purrumbete once again turned on trophy brown trout fishing with multiple fish to over 10lb caught in one day. Casting hard body lures to fish chasing minnows did the trick with anglers fishing into the evening finding the best results.
Lake Bullen Merri Lake Bullen Merri saw anglers cross paths with Chinook salmon. Hugh Hanson banked himself a ripper salmon casting Daiwa TD 95 minnow then went 5.73lbs. Hugh was spinning land based from the lake margins.
Deep Lake Up at Deep Lake anglers had a ball catching Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout to 2kg. Trolling or casting Tassie devils or Daiwa double clutch lures was very effective along with powerbait on a running sinker rig. This lake is a great spot for land based anglers.
Wurdee Boluc Closer to home Wurdee Boluc gave anglers casting spoon type lures plenty of action with a mix of redfin, brown and rainbow trout on the chew.
Rushworth/KyabramStill quite a few Redfin being caught at Waranga Basin, mainly 18 to 20ft out from the Yatch Club. A few Yellowbelly starting to being caught, the big 60cm plus fish will be not far away once Spring hits? Deep diving small Hardbodies and Ice Jigs working well. The Stuart Murray Channel out Punt road area Tatura has been very good, plenty of small Yellowbelly and some nice Redfin on Jackal T/N 60’s. The main Channel along the Tatura/Rushworth Road has been very productive, Redfin and Yellowbelly on Worms, Yabbies and Jackal T/N 60’s working the best. The main Eastern Channel near Wahring has been fishing well for Redfin and Yellowbelly on Jackal T/N 60’s. Blair Munro has had some cracker sessions there with the best Yellowbelly going 54cm and some Redfin around 37cm also and hooked a few freight trains (Cod) that the light gear didn’t stand a chance. Pro Staffer had Shane had his 4yo daughter Payton (pic) out for a fish over the weekend, Payton landing 4 Carp and a ripper 35cm Redfin, all on Worms, Spring is a great time to get the Kids out fishing. The main Channel out Echuca side of Rochester is fishing well for Redfin on worms. A few Yellowbelly on Bassman Spinnerbaits Yellowman Series in the Campaspe River around Rochester.
Lake EildonA few Nice Browns and Rainbows around 4 to 5 lb in the Goulburn River on Scrubworms and Celta style spinners. Brown Trout and Redfin in the Big River Arm on Scrubworms and around the Cemetry Point, Footy Oval and the back of the Caravan Park area. Some nice Cod around 86cm on Cheese and big surface lures around Jews Creek.
SheppartonThe Goulburn has been really quiet so most focus has been around the local lakes, Trout, Yellowbelly and Redfin on offer, best method is Powerbait under a float, worms and lures such as Size 3 Stumpjumpers and Jackal T/N 60’s. Victoria Lake, Kialla Lakes and Graigmuir in Mooroopna your best chance.
The MurrayWe have had a few customers mentioning there is plenty of Yellowbelly around Barham. The only method that worked was slow moving worms, they didn’t hook a fish on a lure or a bait that was not moving.
Next Week Next week keep an eye on the squid with the whole Bellarine Peninsular holding good numbers. If the weather allows venture off shore and chase a gummy shark. Freshwater fisho’s try Lake Toolorook or Deep Lake casting or trolling Tassie devils in a white colour.
