Trellys Fishing Report
Corio Bay
The Geelong inner harbour has welcomed back one of its favourite landbased species, Snotty Trevalla. Anglers have been finding success throwing small creature or curl tail soft plastics work very well and will also get majority of the other species kicking about in the area. Bait will always be a standout for these with ‘Trellys Chicken’ working best. Don’t knock it until you try it, works really well. Good areas to target these guys are the Geelong Waterfront, Cunningham pier and north shore are all fantastic areas to suss.
The Outer Harbour
The outer Harbour still remains a popular location for anglers chasing BIG Calamari in the shallow water, size 3.0 or 3.5 jigs are working well with natural baitfish colours working best. Some hoods have been getting over 40cm in length so its well worth getting down there and having a crack.
Swan Bay
Swan Bay has been a popular location for anglers this past week trying to escape the crazy weather and there has been some great fishing on offer in the channel. Silver Trevally, Pinkie snapper, Salmon and garfish. A key to fishing this area is a steady burley trail and persistence to sift through the rubbish fish, do that and the better fish will start to hit the deck.
Hopkins River
The south west estuary systems have been holding some impressive fishing this past week with Bream and Perch both on the chew, The Hopkins River was a standout. Peri Stavropoulos from Trellys Geelong along with Jason Bird managed a few Bream to 44cm and a few smaller estuary perch. Soft Plastics, Deep diving jerkbaits and vibes were all working very well. The water has been very dirty so plenty of scent on lures has definitely helped.
Lake Purrumbete
Lake Purrumbete still remains to be the best trout fishing location across the state at the moment with plenty of good reports still rolling in of anglers landing brown trout to 8lb along with the usual other species that hang around there like Rainbow Trout, Tiger Trout, Chinook Salmon and Redfin. Casting the weed edges with shallow jerk baits is working very well at the moment.
Shepparton Lake
School holidays are in full swing and we are hearing plenty of reports of school aged kids heading down to the lake and catching plenty of trout. Early mornings have been the best with lures such as XR4s or small Tn38s with Amish being caught on the weed edges. As the sun comes up more small spinners have been working well especially in the open water areas near the skate park. Bait fishing has been successful during the day with most opting for powerbaits under a float casted deep into the weed or just to the edges of the weed.
Kialla Lakes
There have been some promising reports this week at Kialla with Redfin being active around the rocky banks. Casting small soft plastics or small Chatterbaits has been working well with the key to be bumping all the rocks along those banks causing plenty of disturbances. Bait fishing with scrub worms or night crawlers has also been better this week with some Redfin caught in the smaller second lake near the sandbars.
Lake Mulwala
The fishing has been steady at Mulwala lately with some nice cod being caught. Big soft plastics used either on the flats with live sonar or on the old river edge has been a great way to chase the cod. Some legal sized fish have been caught trolling both the 15ft Old mates and also the Codgers with purples and greens being popular lure colours lately. Bait fishing has been a little quiet this winter with only the odd undersized fish being reported with cheese and chicken working best for the bait fisherman.
Lake Eildon
It’s been a bumper couple of weeks for those chasing trout with yet again plenty of reports coming in. Trolling the trusty tassie devil seems to be the best way to target these fish with this week reports coming in from all over the lake. Cod are still being caught on bigger lures such as the tremors and magdrafts with low light periods working best. Fishing from the bank with worms or power baits has been a successful method for bait fisherman with some nice trout and Redfin being reported this past week.
