Trellys Fishing Report

Trellys Fishing Report

Corio Bay

Corio Bay this week has been a little quite as the weather hasn’t been to crash hot for fishing but not to say that there isn’t any fish on the chew getting around. Australian Salmon have been in good numbers in the inner harbour with the Geelong Waterfront and North Shore holding majority of the population. They have been biting best either trolling white occy skirts or casting soft plastics around structure. At times they can be seen busting on the surface also so does pay to keep an eye out for when this happens. Pinky Snapper have also been hanging around in half decent numbers, they seem to be sitting pretty tight to the structures. Soft Plastics have been most effective with natural colours in baitfish patterns proving to be most effective.

Bellarine Peninsula

King George Whiting still remain well and truly on the bite along the peninsula at the moment especially around St Leonards. The fishing there at the moment has been sensational with some great reports coming through. The size of fish is also of a high quality for the area with most around high 30’s with some over 40 in the mix also. Not only are the whiting going pretty good but so too are the squid and they can be found in the same areas as the whiting at the moment. Working size 3.0 and 3.5 jigs have been most effective as of late.

Surf Beaches

The local surf beaches have been hot for Anglers chasing Australian Salmon. Casting Baits such as blue bait has been working really well but lures have definitely been the standout. 35 gram Lasers have been by far the standout lure lately. The best colours have been Blue, White and Green rigged with a twin assist hook setup.

Goulburn River

The river is now on the rise which is frustrating just before school holidays but there still has been a heap of Crays caught. Murchison and Moira Park are popular camping locations and these areas have been prominent in our Cray reports. There is still plenty of smaller Crays being caught in the heart of Shepparton but it seems the bigger legal sized ones are upstream in the cleaner water. There has been the odd cod and Yellowbelly reported this week from those trolling small codgers with purple and black being the best colour. Bait fishing can be difficult with the Crays around but there has still been plenty of carp caught on worms and the odd small cod reported on chicken.

Shepparton Lake

The pelicans are back at the lake and this usually means the trout have been stocked for the school holidays. This is the best time to get to the lake with the trout freshly stocked the chances of landing 3/4 in a session is high. Powerbaits and worms under a float is a great way to target these trout on bait. Those casting lures will find that small plastics such as the strike tigers and keitechs are great for the stocked fish. Small divers and jerkbaits can also be great lures for trout in the lake but make sure you keep them above the weed or else you will be spending plenty of time untangling weed from your trebles.

Waranga Basin

The soft plastic bite is still hot at the basin with some good-sized Redfin being caught.

The fish are still holding around points and also the rock bank up the Tatura end. A slow roll technique has worked best lately with 3/5 spins of the reel followed by a long pause to send the lure back to the bottom.Like past weeks you need to attack the points from different directions with the fish more active in different areas and sometime a lure coming from a different direct such as shallow to deep or deep to shallow being the key. Trolling blades and deep divers in dark colours have also been a great way to target winter Redfin at the basin with the fish mostly being reported in 12/16ft of water. Bait fishing from the bank is also popular in the school holidays and there has been some pan sized fish caught recently off the bank with nightcrawler worms working great for those fishing from the banks of the basin.

Arcadia Fish Out Pond

The pond at the Arcadia Hatchery is stocked and ready for the busy school holiday period.

The dam is a great place to take the kids in the holidays with fishing just one of the many things the kids can do out there. There is a huge playground and grassed area, BBQ and toilet facilities are also available. There has been a couple of cod caught over the past week with Spinnerbaits around the trees working well. Scrub worms were the best baits earlier in the year with Yellowbelly loving a big juicy scrub worn. You don’t need to cast super far at the pond so focus on the structure and about 6ft from the banks.

Lake Eppalock

Mainly smaller catches reported at Eppalock this week with the continued trend of angler’s mainly finding fish in the deeper water. Worms were effective on the weekend getting some redfin and yellowbelly. Small body deep diving hard bodies also doing well like the RMG 8+ divers as the fish have been sitting super deep. Not any word of cod catches this week but stick to large lay downs and rock banks using hardbodies and spinnerbaits.

Cairn Curren

A couple cod caught at the spillway this week on spinnerbaits (bassman codman 1oz in white) and word of a nice cod caught in the lake itself on a deep diving hardbody. Redfin catches picked up a little this week with a few local anglers managing some good numbers trolling deep diving hard bodies. A few were also caught on profishent blades (ora vibe 45) with one angler managing a 48cm redfin. Didn’t get many reports of yellow belly this week but the few we did hear about were caught close to structure.

Bridgewater

Two nice surface cod caught this week on pompadour’s along with a solid cod caught on a jackal Gantarel. All three were caught late afternoon, A handful of nice yellow belly reported this week caught trolling profishent chainsaw’s. Land based anglers managed to pick up a couple cod on chicken this week closer to town. A few carp were caught on worms putting up some big fights. Patience is key this time of year with th cooler weather.

Serpentine

A bit slower this week with lower numbers reported to the shop but there were still some nice catches with one angler managing a 74cm cod on spinnerbait and a healthy 50cm yella on a bassman yellaman casting tight to some laydowns.  Don’t be afraid to try a larger surface lure this time of year when trying to lure out a big cod!

Campaspe River

Not much word is the shop this week for Campaspe, water clarity as far as we know is still pretty good so using natural colours or very loud colours like pink or white would be our choice, hardbody’s this time of year usually do pretty well as they can get down quite deep provided your using a deep diver. Spinnerbaits are still a great option as they can get a fish angry and cause a reaction bite. Bassman have some great options along with Australian crafted lures if chasing some deep divers!

Bendigo Family Lakes

Some good numbers of trout and redfin being caught at  Crusoe on bait and spinners at the minute, trying using spinners with pink or red on them. Powerbaits great for trout and we have a good range of colour options in store. Worms are also a great option as just about any hungry fish will eat them. Weeroona continues to be a little more quiet with the odd redfin being caught but no great size to them. Tom thumb has seen a few silver perch catches the past week and the odd large carp! As far as we know, no real yellowbelly catches to report.
