Trellys Fishing Report

Trellys Fishing Report

Corio Inner and Outer Harbour

The inner harbour if Corio Bay has been offering some decent landbased fishing this past week with St Helens and Lineburners rocks offering a small variety of species on the chew. Pinkie Snapper, Flathead, Australian Salmon and King George Whiting are all cruising through these areas at the moment. Small baits like Pipi, Squid or Blue Bait are all working well, ideally the best time to fish is when the wind is strong and stirring up all the bottom structure which brings the fish in close to feed. Another great landbased option this week has been Portarlington Pier with large numbers of Australia Salmon hanging around. Anglers casting small metal lures or soft plastics have been having some great success. Heaps of fun, good feed when bled and put on ice and fantastic bait for Snapper and Gummy Sharks.

St Leonards

St Leonards has improved a bit this week with King George Whiting reports after last week’s very hot and cold bite. The fish are chewing much better and the size of fish is averaging around the mid 30’s with some around the low 40’s. As we mention all the time, strong tides, late afternoon, early morning, pipis and squid for bait.

Southern Port Phillip Bay

The Southern part of Port Phillip the Gummy Sharks have been going pretty good with reports coming in of anglers landing sharks to 15kg and although we haven’t heard anything officially bigger there is bound to be some giants around or possibly been caught. Fresh Salmon and Calamari are the go to baits, even Silver Trevally makes fantastic bait too and all these species are chewing well at the moment.

Queenscliff

The Queenscliff Bight has fired up a bit with the Calamari reports with anglers finding large numbers of Calamari getting around. Not huge in size at the moment but the numbers are there and the big ones are sure to rock up any week now.

Offshore

Offshore the Barrel Tuna bite remains pretty hot and cold, still fish being landed though. The back of the RIP and behind the Barwon bluff between 50 and 70 metres seems to be the current hot spot for them but as we all know that can change in a matter of hours.

Barwon Estuary

The Barwon River has still been offering some great Silver Trevally fishing especially for landbased fishos. Casting soft plastics have been working best or baits like pipis and bluebait have been accounting for plenty of fish also.

Goulburn River

There may have been some miserable days this week but the fishing in Shepparton has been far from that with some early spring type Yellowbelly action happening in the heart of town.

This has been a productive week with Yellowbelly caught using various methods. Bait fishing has all been about large scrub worms fished close to the banks with the banks holding reeds or rock being the best areas. Those trolling have been catching Yellowbelly this week using small old mates or codgers with pinks and purples working well. Those fishing around the junction have been catching Yellowbelly by Casting tn60 jackals in brown dog or Peacock have also been great with hook up rates a lot higher with those taking off the trebles and running single belly hooks. Outside of Shepparton we continue to get reports from the Murchison area with Yellowbelly and carp being caught on worms. Casting Spinnerbaits upstream of Murch has also been a grey way to target Yellowbelly in the past.

Broken River

A little bit of rain this week has helped the fishing in the broken river with some late season cod and Yellowbelly being caught on the edge. The fish are sitting pretty tight to structure so lures such as Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and Lipless crankbaits are best as they can be pulled through the cover a lot easier than hardbodies. Down stream of both weirs seems to be the best stretches of water with some reports of carp also being caught but more downstream in Shepparton. Springtime can be great in the broken so once cod season shuts it’s a great place to go and target Yellowbelly.

Shepparton Lake

It’s been a productive week for those fishing in the Shepparton lake with so many different species reported this week. Those bait fishing have caught Trout & Silver perch on worms around the edges with the grass hill also a great spot. Those using lures out deeper have this week caught both Redfin and Yellowbelly with small hardbodies and weedless rigged soft plastics working best.

School holidays are coming up and the lake can sometimes get a stock up of trout so keep an eye out for that. If it doesn’t get a re stock don’t stress because the spring holidays is usually prime time for Redfin and Yellowbelly so get into our Shepparton store and stock up for the upcoming school holidays.

Waranga Basin

The Redfin are pushing up on the edges in the afternoons and plenty have been caught this week.

Both anglers using boats or fishing from the banks have been catching fish as the sun goes down.

Jerkbaits have been the best lures with both the Rapala XR6 and also the Jackal Squirrel catching plenty of fish. Some days the fish are smashing the lure while it’s moving other days on the pause so just change up your technique to see what works best. Those fishing out deeper have also been catching Redfin in around 8/12ft with blades and trolling small stumpjumpers working well. Worms from the banks has also been a great way to chase Redfin this week with the fish pushing shallow in the afternoon making bank fishing much easier. There has also been some big carp caught from the bank on worms so hold on if you’re using light tackle.

Lake Eppalock

This weekend saw some nice sized redfin and a few more yellowbelly caught both from the bank and by boat. The redfin have been sitting quite deep, however using down and side imaging ha been effective in find schools of decent fish. Trolling through these schools to fine the active fish, followed by targeting these schools with blades and soft plastics. Bait will also prove effective in catching fish, with scrub worms dropped over these schools being the choice of baits.

Campaspe river

Kayaks have been helpful in getting into the snags. Good sized cod have been caught using bigger soft plastics, including 6inch weedless bait junkie paddle tails, and 7inch RT Shads. Some numbers of reddies and yellas have also been caught below Elmore weir on worms.

Cairn Curran

Reports have been few and far between, however bait has proven effective in picking up the odd yellowbelly and redfin. Again, Fishing deeper and around rocky points have held fish. The Main Basin is fishing slower than around the top of the lake, with better number of fish being caught around picknick point and upwards. Finding areas of rock and trees have been the best.

Bridgewater

It has started to produce some more fish with more numbers of cod being caught on lures. Small natural-coloured spinnerbaits and Jackall TN80s have been the choice of lures. Blind casting the heavy timber and slow rolling these lures has picked off some cod, with a majority being caught in the 50cm range. With a couple of days of warmer weather, Serpentine has started to produce the odd fish, although still slow fishing, the opportunity at a yellowbelly is starting to increase with some good sized yellas being caught. Small Hardbodies have been the choice of lures, working them slowly through the heavy timber.

Serpentine

Some nice yellas caught in the last week on ½ ounce spinnerbaits and smaller sized hardbodies like size 2 & 3 stump jumpers. Make to fish each section fairly heavily as they make not commit on the first couple casts, the waters still a tad cold so we still need to work that bit harder to encourage a bite. Some word of a couple of small cod on larger hard bodies and soft plastics. Being very late season there is not many chances left to get a cod before season closes so get out and give it a crack.

Bendigo Family Lakes

A few more redfin caught the past week on bait and a few on spinners, this Saturday looking to be a nice warm sunny day could get the fish biting a bit better so worms and corn will be best bet for bait and spinners and soft plastics will be prime lure selections. Crusoe is still producing the odd trout early morning and late afternoon on powerbait
