Trellys Fishing Report
Corio Bay
The Fishing around the local region has been nothing short of spectacular over the past week with just about all species on the chew. Starting in the bay the Snapper are still going very well with plenty of reports rolling through with the outer harbour standing out. Anglers fishing the channel are still picking up plenty of fish. The spoil grounds are starting to heat up with reports of anglers picking up fish on soft plastics, Gulp Jerk shads again dominating the reports in the area. Portarlington has still be producing some nice fish out in the old channel and spoil grounds just further north of it. Mainly bait fishing again but you can expect to pick some up on plastics too. Bait fishos have been having their best success with Silver Whiting, Pilchards, Squid, Manta Shrimp and Sauries. It is a long list of baits but each day is different and they can even be picky on the different tides even on the same day.
Bellarine Peninsula
Calamari and King George Whiting have gone up an ante with reports getting better after a few weeks of it being a bit slower around the Clifton Springs. Calamari in the 2.5 – 4 metre mark have been in good numbers snatching up size 2.5 and 3.0 jigs, Bight and flashy colours have been working best lately with the super sunny days. The UV glow on the jigs will be popping with the natural light at the moment. King George Whiting have also been pretty good out there too, fishing a little deeper and ideally try to time your fishing to be around the stronger tides.
Queenscliff
Queenscliff has had quite the bite of Calamari over the past week with the Point Lonsdale bight holding majority of the action. The Squid do seem to be absolutely everywhere from shallow to deep and even very assessable for land based anglers fishing from the shore. If you are going to fish from the shore, the low tide is best as it allows you to reach the weed beds easier where the squid are hiding.
Barwon Heads
Offshore snapper continue to be out in force with Gone fishing Charters right amongst the action again with some impressive numbers of fish being caught. Most fish have been averaging around the 1 kilo mark but there is still a great percentage of fish much larger getting around too.
Goulburn River
It was a bumper cod opening week for those fishing in the Goulburn River with high numbers of fish reported in his week. We have had a little river rise after the recent rain and this has seemed to fire the fish up. Murchison was a great area for those fishing with bait with legal sized cod reported on cheese, chicken and scrub worms.Down towards Moira Park Spinnerbaits and surface lures worked well with one cod measuring in at 82cms.
In the heart of Shepparton there were higher numbers of cod caught but a lot of smaller cod were caught amongst some legals. The boat ramp, behind the Shepp lake and also the junction we’re great locations for those fishing off the bank.
Broken River
Just like the Goulburn the Broken River has had a little flush of water and this has been much needed. This flow has really fired up the Yellowbelly below the weirs with good numbers of Yellowbelly being caught. Tn60 jackals and soft vibes have been the best lures for those chasing Yellowbelly in the broken.Cod fishing this week has also been good with surface lures working best. Jackal pompadours and Bassman Aussie crawlers worked close to the bank or structure have been the stand outs. Bait fishing in Shepparton has also been a great method when chasing both cod and Yellowbelly with shrimp, yabbies and cheese being the best baits.
Waranga Basin
The basin has come up around 8% this week which has again pushed a lot of fish shallow and feeding on the freshly flooded banks. Small divers, spinners and soft plastics have all worked well with Redfin being caught in around 2/6ft of water in both the mornings and evenings. Those fishing with bait from the bank has also caught plenty of Redfin in the shallows with worms being the best baits. Out deeper trolling small codgers and 10ft old mates has worked great when the fish push a little deeper as the days warm up.
Greens Lake
There has been a few more reports this week from Greens Lake with plenty of smaller Redfin being caught. This has been great to see because the past few months the lake has been hit and miss. It’s not just small fish with the odd 35cm Redfin resorted amongst the smaller ones. Small 2/3 inch soft plastics lightly rigged have been the best lure for those casting. Trolling tn60 jackals has worked well for those trolling with the Tn60 not running to deep. Bait fishing from the bank has seen plenty of carp and the odd Redfin being caught. Night crawlers have been the best bait for those chasing carp with small yabbies being best for the Redfin, The lake isn’t overly deep so the best times to fish have been mornings and evenings.
