Trellys Fishing Report
Corio Bay
With many young anglers already finished for the year with school we have seen lots of our local land based fishing locations producing some good fishing. The Geelong waterfront has offered some great variety of species including Pinkie Snapper, King George Whiting, Flathead and Salmon. Most anglers are finding their best success throwing soft plastics around but there is still a large percentage of fish being caught on bait. Salted Pilchard and Squid are two fantastic baits to run when fishing here.
Outer Harbour
The outer harbour has continued to hold some good fishing to those chasing snapper. Reports have slowed down a little bit but this could be due to weather and not heaps of boats out on the water chasing them. The anglers that have been getting out have been reporting with good captures. Bait fishing has been the most popular for anglers with still lots of fish being caught by those throwing soft plastics around.
Queenscliff
Queenscliff has offered some hot fishing this past week with huge numbers of calamari being caught. Although they aren’t huge in size they are in ridiculous numbers. Just off Bell Reef and the football oval has been a great area for them with depths anywhere between 3 to 10 metres. They just seem to be everywhere but finding good water clarity is key, ideally the High tide slack is the best time to be fishing it.
Offshore
Offshore has been fishing very well for snapper and is showing no sign of slowing down. The 50 metre line continues to produce some good fishing with snapper to 3kg in great numbers with plenty of fish up to 6kg being caught also. Gummy Sharks still remain a semi common bi catch with a few more Kingfish starting to pop up too! It’s well worth next time heading out having some pelagic gear handy as the kings are obviously around and the Tuna should rock up just about any day also!
Goulburn River
After the fresh flush of water, a couple of weeks ago the Goulburn is now back at a steady level and the fishing has been great. Out towards Murchison there has been a real good spinnerbait bite during the day with plenty of legal cod and Yellowbelly being caught. Bait fishing off the banks of Moira Park has also been a successful way to chase cod this week with plenty caught on chicken, cheese and Bardi grubs. Towards Shepparton there was been good numbers of cod caught on the troll with 15ft old mates working well, also in Shepparton near the junction there has been some bigger cod caught on surface lures with Bassman Aussie Crawlers and also a couple caught on the bigger sized top water lures such as the Balista Tremors.
Broken River
Yet again the broken river has been a surface fishing hot spot with a heap of reports coming in this week. Pompadours, Balista Hunchbacks and also soft frogs skipped into thick cover have all worked well with cod reported below Benalla, nalinga, Orrvale and also along Broken River Drive. We have also been getting reports that small Spinnerbaits have been working well during the heat of the day. It’s not only lures that are working well in the broken with some legal sized fish caught amongst plenty of small fish on worms, shrimp and yabbies.
Waranga Basin.
The basin this week has been very hit and miss with some reports of 20/30 fish caught in a session and others only catching 3/4. fishing towards the caravan park and boat club seems to be best with more bigger fish holding in these areas. The banks opposite Harrimans are still holding fish but it’s majority large schools or small Redfin that can be very fussy.Vertically fishing zx40 blades has been a great way to target Redfin near the boat club and caravan park. Trolling small divers in around 12/15ft has also worked in the same areas. In the evenings there has been plenty of smaller fish caught near the ramp at Harrimans point with small chubby’s and also worms off the bank working best. There has been the odd Yellowbelly being caught off the sunken timber piles with black gulps being the best lures to target these fish.
Kialla Lakes
The rain a couple of weeks ago has lifted the levels a little in the lakes at Kialla which has pushed plenty of Yellowbelly and Redfin to the edge in the evening to feed.It won’t be uncommon to catch 3/4 fish in a half an hour session walking the banks at Kialla when the water is higher. Small soft plastics, jerkbaits and bent minnows are the stand out lures when targeting these fish in the shallows. Bait fishing from the banks has also been a great way to chase fish at Kialla when the water is higher. Worms or small yabbies under a float in around 1/2 ft of water can be a great way to fish the lake especially in the low light periods.
