Trellys Fishing Report

Trellys Fishing Report

Geelong Inner Harbour

The Corio Bay inner harbour has remained a bit of a fishing hotspot for families and anglers trying to escape some windy conditions with a great variety of species on the chew. The Spoil Ground just off Lineburners boat ramp has been one of the many spots producing good reports with pinky snapper, king George whiting, flathead, snook and salmon. Soft plastics are always going to be a reliable option to get amongst the action and of course bait will work fantastic too. Salted Pilchards, Squid and pipis all make for a great bait and with the aid of a consistent burley trail in the water it should result in a great session on the water nice and close to launch.

Outer Harbour

The outer harbour has continued to offer some great fishing for King George Whiting this past week with good numbers being reported from anglers fishing along the Curlewis bank between 3-5 metres of water has been the sweet spot but being active and making regular moves to find the fish is crucial as you will find the big school feeding and will give you the best chance to smack them. Calamari were a little bit tougher this week in these areas however there still was some reports coming through for anglers getting stuck into a few. Size 3.0 jigs in a bright pink colour seem to be most effective but when the sky is high and bright like it is at the moment bright jigs are usually a standout. Snapper were still on the cards for some anglers this past week and although there wasn’t a heap reported being landed we still had some reports come through of anglers landing fish to 4kg. Fishing tide changes and fresh baits is key this time of year as the fishing can be a little tougher.

Offshore

Offshore has remained the talk of the fishing community with Kingfish, Tuna and mako sharks all holding in great numbers. Kings are still hanging around the shallow reefs around Ocean Grove and Point Lonsdale, livebaits and poppers have been by far the most effective baits/lures at the moment. Tuna are hanging out a little bit deeper, more so between 30 and 40 metres cruising on the surface. Approaching them with stealth and launching poppers into them will give you the best chance for a bite. Makos are out even deeper again, out in 60-70 metres. A strong burley trail whilst drifting is the go with compact baits like half a salmon or strip of fish suspended under a balloon should get you into the action

Goulburn River

The river has returned back to its normal height in Shepparton and this has seen plenty of fish reported this week. Trolling had been a very popular way to chase cod this week with the 15ft Old Mates being very productive especially in the Red Ripper, Tree Frog and Black Magpie colours. Their stretch of water between the boat ramp and the walking bridge behind Aqua moves has been a very productive area for those trolling. Upstream Murchison continues to be a great area for those bait fishing with numerous reports of cod and Yellowbelly being caught this week with Bardi Grubs, Scrub worms and cheese working great. Casting Spinnerbaits and catching cod near the Shepparton golf club has also been reported this week by a couple of regular fisho’s

Broken River

It’s been a top water week in the broken river with a heap of reports coming in. Jackall Pompadours, Balista Hunchbacks and Aussie crawlers have all worked this week with some legal-size cod caught amongst a heap of smaller models. During the day the lure fishing seems to get a little harder with only a hand full of fish being reported on Spinnerbaits and lipless crankbaits. Yellowbelly are very active along the broken river drive section of the river with good numbers reported from those bait fishing with shrimp and small yabbies.

Kialla Lakes

The lake is fishing the best it has for 12 months with a heap of Yellowbelly being caught,

Slow rolling beetle spin rigged soft plastics has been very popular with the main bite periods being in the evenings. Small divers like the 10ft old mates, chubby’s and small Rapala's have also worked well in Kialla this past week. Bait fishing near the willows with worms and yabbies has also been a great way to target Yellowbelly with some 35/40cm fish reported this week from those areas.

Shepparton Lake

Redfin in the evenings has been reported a lot more this week with some decent sized reddys reported. Slow rolling weedless rigged soft plastics had been a very popular method along with throwing bent minnows just above the weed. Bait fishing at both boat ramps has also been great with Redfin and silver perch reported this week caught mostly on worms.
