Trellys Fishing Report

Trellys Fishing Report

Offshore

Kingfish and Tuna remain on many anglers mind this week with still some good reports rolling through. Kingfish have been a bit tricky at times and often frustrating, marking huge schools of fish that just “won’t chew”. They have been going but just on very small bite windows, our tip is to be aiming putting your time into fishing the tide changes. Live baits are always a hot option however if you spot a seal burn your baits in as the resident seals have been very good at pulling baits off rigs. Top water lures, jigs and trolling lures have also been effective. Southern Bluefin Tuna have been again quite hit and miss these past few days however with patience there is still fish being caught. Casting top water lures at milling / surface fish has been working a charm as the fish have often been seen on the surface cruising around. Small cup face poppers between 120mm and 190mm have been most effective, sinking and floating stick baits have also been accounting for plenty of captures also. Trolling throughout the day will put you in for a great shot at the action. First light has been a great time to have lures in the water to target the tuna whilst they are still in their feeding mood.

Corio Bay

Inside the bay (both inner and outer harbour) there has been a great variety of species on offer including pinky snapper, King George Whiting, Flathead and Salmon. Soft plastics in the spoil grounds has been lethal in landing this variety of species. The spoil grounds have been one of the more popular locations to be fishing lately in the 4-6 metre zone.

Geelong Waterfront

The Geelong waterfront has had a pretty hot Silver trevally bite this week with anglers getting amongst some good numbers of fish. Land based locations have been working very for the trevally lately but if you can get out in a small boat or kayak and cast around the moored boats that seems to be where the bulk of them are hanging out.

Lake Bullen Merri

Lake Bullen Merri has been offering some great Bass Fishing these past few weeks and currently showing really no sign of slowing down. Bait fishing has been working well and so too has dropping soft plastics and ice jigs are also a great option to try. Well worth having a flat line troll at first and last light for a trout too as there are still plenty of them being caught too.

Goulburn River

The Goulburn River in Shepparton has now been sitting at a steady level for the last couple of weeks which has made fishing conditions great. We have been getting plenty of reports this past week with some nice sized cod reported. Most of these reports have been from those fishing in the mornings or on dark with temperatures during the day being very hot. Bait fishing around Arcadia with Bardi grubs has been great along with scrub worms near Toolamba. Trolling small hardbodies in Shepparton has also been a great way to target cod in the cooler parts of the day. Nagambie has also been a hot spot this past week with a heap of cod reported along with one over the magic meter mark. The most reported methods have been Casting Spinnerbaits close to structure, surface lures at night or using chicken and cheese as bait.

Broken River

The river is pretty low at the moment but the fishing has not been affected with cod being caught regularly on both Spinnerbaits and surface lures especially in the evenings. Downstream of both weirs has been productive in the mornings with slow rolling Tn60 Jackall’s being the best lures for both cod and Yellowbelly. Bait fishing has also been productive this week with some legal sized Yellowbelly caught along broken river drive with shrimp and night crawlers being the best baits.

Waranga Basin

The level of the basin is now sitting at 45% and is dropping weekly. It has meant you need to launch at the low-level ramp at Harrimans. The positive thing this week is that you have not had to move far from the ramp to find fish with plenty of Redfin caught within the 5knot zone. Trolling in this shallow area with small divers and lipless crankbaits has been great for those chasing Redfin with 10/15 fish being caught in a hour in the evenings. Casting small plastics, spinners and divers from the bank has also been a great way to chase Redfin this week. When we say from the bank it’s best to walk out to about knee deep just so you’re casting in a little deeper water. Bait fishing from the bank has also been popular this week for those chasing Redfin with some nice pan sized fish caught on worms and small yabbies.

Kialla Lakes

Like most other water ways in the area Kialla is very low which is limiting the amount of fishing being caught on the drop offs as some are only a few inches under wanted. This week most fish reported have been from those casting deeper with blades or plastics. Slow rolling with a pause has been the best retrieval method for both Yellowbelly and the odd Redfin. Bait fishing in the shade or near willows has also been a great option with small yabbies and scrub worms being the best baits.

The best time to both lure and bait fish in Kialla has been super early or just on dark.
