Trellys Fishing Report

Trellys Fishing Report

Corio Bay

Tough fishing conditions this past week has not made it easy for anglers to venture out, however to those that have are managing to find some good success across the region. The outer Harbour of Corio Bay has been offering some good snapper fishing to those still having a crack. The northern part of the bay around the quarries, 9 foot bank and Wilson spit has been a bit of a hot spot lately. No record breaking fish or in crazy numbers but fish between 2 – 4 kilo have been in decent numbers. Along the same rough areas there has also been good numbers of King George Whiting being caught. Down the4 southern part of the channel and in the shallows of Clifton Springs there has been a few Garfish starting to pop up, not in massive numbers but anglers that are giving it a crack they have been finding a few getting around. A solid burley trail with tiny baits suspended under a pencil float is the key to success when chasing these tasty little morsels.

Offshore

Offshore Barwon heads the Kingfish bite is still on the go with slight improvement this week with a few more consistent reports rolling through. Anglers trolling live baits have been finding the better success as of late with fish to just under the metre mark being landed. Fish have also been landed on top water lures such as stickbaits and poppers, jigs have also been working when the fish are sitting tight mid to deep in the water column. Bluefin tuna have turned up a gear this past week with some improved reports rolling through for anglers out there having a go. The 50 metre line straight off the bluff towards the rip has been holding good numbers of fish and they seem to be in a feeding mood, trolling diving and skirted lures has been working very well lately landing fish to 15kg in weight. At times they can be sighted on the surface and as its been the case the last few weeks poppers have been deadly.

Barwon River

The Barwon River after all this rain has been fishing very well for Carp. Anglers hitting up the banks armed with bread and corn have been landing plenty of fish. Anywhere from the Moorabool st Bridge right up to Buckley falls has been holding plenty of fish

Goulburn River

The river in Shepparton is slightly rising but on minimal at this stage but any extra flow usually fires up the cod this time of year. Over the past week there has been plenty of cod caught especially on bait with Bardi grubs and chicken working great in Shepparton. Up and down the Goulburn there has been plenty of carp caught recently with worms and corn the best baits, carp are not always the most targeted species locally but if you have kids, it can be a great way to spend time on the river as you can usually catch a hand full of fish in a session. Trolling smaller hardbodies out towards Rafterie’s road has also been a reported technique this week with some good-sized cod caught near sand bars. Murchison continues to be a great location in the Goulburn for surface fishing and bait fishing with legal cod caught regularly in this area. Lake Nagambie and the river upstream of Nagambie has also been on fire this past week with a heap of Yellowbelly caught on black gulps and tn60’s. Casting bigger soft plastics had also been a great way to target big cod with meter plus fish caught over the past couple of weeks by those chasing cod using live sonar.

Broken River

The Broken is still reasonably low but there has been good reports of cod and Yellowbelly being caught. Soft vibes and Tn60s have been great lure choices for those fishing up towards Benalla with some legal sized Yellowbelly caught on a slow roll technique. Down towards the weirs there has been some cod reported on small Spinnerbaits with dark colours working best. In Shepparton there has been some legal sized cod caught off the top along with a heap of smaller cod with pompadours and soft frogs being the best surface lures lately.

Bait fishing with shrimp and worms has been great for Yellowbelly with carp also getting caught on the same baits. Scrub worms and cheese has been the stand out baits for cod with good numbers of cod being caught lately.

Kialla Lakes

The water levels are as low as they have been in year but there has still been some fish caught this week. Beetle spin rigged crush city soft plastics have worked great with Yellowbelly being caught mostly in the first lake on these lure set ups. This fishing the second lake have reported a few Redfin being caught on small drivers such as the old mates and Jackall chubby’s. Bait fishing in both lakes have also been a good option and the best method has been floating worms and small yabbies around the edges and near weeds. If the lake gets a rise at some point the fish will push up on the edges and that’s when bent minnows, jerkbaits and small soft plastics will come into play in the shallows.

Craigmuir Lake

The small lake in Mooroopna has been amongst the reports in store this week with some nice sized Redfin being caught. It can be a tricky lake to fish with the weed being thick but those fishing it lately have been going super light or running their lures weedless. Soft plastics on a weedless jig head have worked well especially the 2inch Keitech easy shiners along with the Tn50s in browndog rigger with a small single hook on the belly hook point. Bait fishing has also worked well in the lake lately with floating scrub worms being the best method.
