Trellys Fishing Report
Inner Harbour
Challenging weather again this week has not made it easy for anglers to get out for a fish and with very limited reports coming through there isn’t a heap to report on, however this week the weather is looking brilliant the fish should be pretty fired up after a week or so of very little pressure. With school holidays underway and whilst the weather is still pretty warm now is a great time to get the kids and family out and wet a line. The Geelong Waterfront is a fantastic location just about all year round when fishing with kids as it’s a great location to simply catch a fish and when out with the kids that’s super important. A simple paternoster rig with a bit of bluebait or squid is a lethal combo for landing a whole variety of species including silver trevally, pinky snapper, salmon and flathead. Soft plastics are another great option to throw around as all mentioned species will eat them and this area is a great spot to try them out.
Outer Harbour
In the boats the spoil grounds are still offering a great variety of species to anglers casting both soft plastics and dropping baits. King George Whiting, Pinky Snapper and flathead are all in great numbers and chewing quite well! Calamari have been a little tricky due to the wind and mercy water but to some anglers finding small patches of better water are certainly pulling in some great hauls. Size 2.5 jigs are proving to be the standout for these anglers.
Bellarine Pensinula
Around the corner towards St Leonards and swan bay the King George Whiting are still holding in fantastic numbers with anglers finding some great numbers of whiting in the area. The average fish is around that 35cm mark with plenty of fish either side if that and some getting well over 40cm! Strong tides and quality baits are key to success. Gummy Sharks have been in good numbers again with Aston Stavropoulos boating a cracking Gummy in the kayak on a chunk of Salmon. Aston also managed a few nice pinkies whilst chasing the gummies.
Stoney Creek
Stoney Creek reservoir was stocked with Estuary Perch 2 ½ years ago and now those fish have grown to a catchable size. Anglers venturing down there have been landing Eps on a variety of lures such as soft plastics, hard bodies and surface lures. Although the fish aren’t at a massive size it is fantastic to see this fishery growing with these epic fish!
Goulburn River
The river is back to a settled level and it’s starting to clear up. We have had plenty of school holiday fishing reports coming in with plenty of cod being caught in numerous locations on a verity of techniques. Around the Murchison area there has been some good numbers of cod caught casting Spinnerbaits from the bank or out of a boat with some legal sized fish amongst the smaller ones.
Yabbies and worms have been the go-to bait for those fishing around the Arcadia area with a few more Yellowbelly reported from this area. In the heart of Shepparton there has been both cod and Yellowbelly caught by trolling medium sized lures such as stump jumpers, old mates and Balista smoke 80s. With the weather staying warm we would expect the Goulburn will fish great for weeks to come so come into your local trellys and stock up for the remaining school holiday and Easter periods.
Broken River
The river has been fishing well especially those walking the banks casting lures.
Small lipless crank baits and soft vibes have worked well for Yellowbelly with a hop and pause technique working best. Spinnerbaits have worked well during the middle of the day with plenty of reports of cod being caught all day long on them. The evening surface bite continues to be good with good numbers of cod still being caught on pompadours and Balista hunchbacks. Bait fishing hasn’t been as productive but we are still getting reports of Yellowbelly being caught on scrub worms along broken river drive and carp on night crawlers out towards nalinga.
Waranga Basin
We have had some hit and miss reports from the basin lately with it being a great day with good numbers of fish or a grind and only 1/2 fish boated. Early mornings and late afternoons have been the best times for the shallow bite with small divers and plastics working well. Bait fishing off the bank in the shallows has seen plenty of smaller fish caught in around 4ft of water. Trolling in around 13ft near points has also been reported this week with both Redfin and Yellowbelly being caught on divers like the RMG Poltergeist and also the Rapala DT8. Casting zx43 blades and small plastics has also been a method used by those targeting Redfin on the points. Fingers crossed the water levels rise soon and once they do this week see a crazy edge bite with a lot of fish pushing up shallow to feed on the freshly covered ground.
Arcadia Fish Out Pond
The pond has been fishing great so far during the school holidays with a heap of keen fisho’s heading out to Arcadia.We had one report of 6 cod being caught in a couple of hours with scrub worms being the bait of choice. There have been a few reports of cod being caught on square bills and also beetle spin rigged Tn60s.
