Trellys Fishing Report
Clifton Springs
This time of year sees anglers come down with a serious case of snapper fever. Clifton Springs was a likely location of a snapper fix this past week but once again anglers had to contend with strong winds. Tide changes that line up with sunrise or sunset saw angler’s boat snapper to an impressive 7kg. Squid were on hand for fresh bait supply with three to four meters of water giving up squid to about 700 grams on size 3 Yamashita jigs.
St Leonards
Over at St Leonards the whiting appeared to be in greater numbers with Bourke St though to the mouth of Swan Bay giving up whiting to 40cm. Again pippie and tenderized squid were number one baits rigged on a running sinker rig. St Leonards also had vast amounts of flathead near the white lady for those drifting with bluebait.
Point Lonsdale Bight
The Point Lonsdale Bight was popular for squid and big squid too. Large baited jigs worked down deep hooked squid to 2kg. Not all the action was refined to those with boats with Bell Reef on a low tide seeing land based anglers get into the action casting artificial jigs. Just remember to be mindful of the swell and tides when at Bell Reef. On the grass beds Chris from ‘Gone Fishing Charters’ saw his clients boat numerous large king George whiting.
Off Shore
Offshore anglers continued to have great success with gummy shark to 20kg devouring fresh salmon fillets in 30 meters of water from Point Lonsdale to Barwon Heads. Snapper also appeared as welcome by catch. Chris from Gone Fishing Charters also guided his clients onto gummy shark to 10kg along with great sized snapper to 6kg during the week.
Surf Beaches
Surf anglers spun up numerous Australian Salmon to 1.5kg from Bancoora Beach and most other beaches along the surf coast. Lead up to high tide fished best with Sea Iron Pelacus lures working a treat.
Heading west the freshwater fishing was on fire with Lake Purrumbete showing no signs of slowing down. Brown, Rainbow & Brook trout all snapped up Tassie devils slow trolled along the east bank. During the middle of the day anglers casting lure and fly around the weed beds also boated some fantastic brown trout to 4kg.
Lake Bullen Merri
Lake Bullen merri was worth the trip for Zac Whitford where he boated a chinook salmon of 2kg trolling a Daiwa Double Clutch 75. Casting lures from the lake edges also resulted in good numbers of Chinook salmon.
Deep Lake continues to see a good mix of brown and rainbow trout to 2kg for those slow trolling Tassie devils.
Nagambie/Murchison
Still a few reports of some good Yellowbelly and Redfin in the Main Eastern Channel around Wahring on Jackal T/N 60’s and 3-4 inch Black or Gold plastic Grubs. The Catternach Channel just out from the Goulburn Weir is still fishing well, Plastics, Size 3 Stumjumpers and Vibes all working well. Worms and small Yabbies are producing some good Redfin as well. The Catternach Channel towards Rushworth, just out of Murchison is producing some Redfin and Yellowbelly using the same methods. The Goulburn River has been really quiet around Nagambie and Murchison/Toolamba.
Rushworth/Kyabram
Waranga Basin is still fishing well for Redfin, not huge numbers, but fish around 40cm more readily available. Small deep diving hardbodies such as RMG Crazy Deep Poltergiest in Bloodnut or Gold working well, as well as Ice Jigs once the school has been found. Greens Lake has been much the same, Redfin are a little harder to find and you may only get a handful a trip, but quality is better with Redfin over 40cm not uncommon using the same methods. Most of the Channels in the region a fishing really well, late afternoon with the changes in the weather to best time, Redfin and Yellowbelly on Small Size 3 Stumpjumpers, Jackal T/N 60’s and Worms and Yabbies working well, find structures such as Dropbars or Willow Trees/ Grasses etc.
Shepparton
A few reports filtering through of Yellowbelly in the Kialla Lakes, Peacock or White Jackal T/N 60’s working the best. Trout in Victoria Lake on Powerbait under a float around the Western Side of the lake, early morning or late afternoon the best time. A few Redfin in Graigmuir Lake in Mooroopna on Spinners with any Red on them, imitation ONDEX’s and Hogbacks working well. The Goulburn River around Shepparton has been really quiet due to the Environmental flow that is still going, however when it stops and the river settles, the fishing will be red hot, maybe 2 weeks away?
Lake Eildon
Col from Murchison and quite a few other Murchison locals have been fishing Lake Eildon around Bonnie Doon area with great success, Col landing his PB 62cm Yellowbelly on a black Soft Plastic, and most of them have been getting plenty of Redfin and Yellowbelly bobbing Soft Plastics, Worms and Yabbies around the trees, try one tree for 15 minutes or so, if no fish, then move to the next, eventually you will find the fish, then catching them is pretty easy. A few big Cod on Mudeye Rattlesnakes and Big Deep Diving Hardbodies around Jews Creek. Rattlesnakes working best late afternoon into dark.
Out Of Town
Michael Evans from Victorian Inland Charters took a trip over to NZ south island fishing the Twizel canal systems. Michael achieved his goal of a 20lb trout with a buck rainbow.
Next Week
Next week should see snapper season really kick into gear. If the weather lets up try offshore for a gummy shark or a tuna as there has been some serious bait and birds working out off Barwon Heads.
